Lymphedema is an abnormal swelling of a limb or other body part as a result of the lymphatic system not functioning effectively. A patient’s risk of developing lymphedema varies depending on the type of cancer and the treatment prescribed.
Cancer-related lymphedema is most commonly caused by the surgical removal or radiation to the lymph nodes. Lymphedema may also be associated with tumor progression in several types of cancer including gynecologic, breast, prostate, head and neck.
Lymphedema is manageable if caught early.

Multiple types of cancer and their treatments may affect abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. This important group of muscles plays a pivotal role in maintaining the body’s bowel, bladder and sexual function.
The following cancers can affect the pelvic floor and increase the risk of problems in those areas:
- Bladder

- Gynecologic, including uterine, ovarian, cervical, vulvar and vaginal

- Rectal or anal

Speech-language pathology services encompass the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of voice, speech and swallowing disorders caused by cancer and its treatments. ReVital’s speech-language pathologists also work with people experiencing cognitive decline related to their cancer and cancer treatment.

ReVital therapists are specially trained to assess your ability to successfully stay at or return to work. Our therapists help you identify the components of your job functions and common issues — such as fatigue, pain or weakness — that may prevent you from safely and effectively stay at or return to work.
